How To Stay Healthy While Traveling
Travel is fun, rejuvenating, and a great way to shake up your routine—but being away from your kitchen, bed, and usual structure can make it harder to stay on track with your healthy habits.
Whether you're heading out on a family vacation, travel frequently for work, or enjoy exploring new places just because, here are a few simple ways to support your health while you're on the road:
Always pack smart snacks - traveling with snacks is a must in my book, especially those packed with blood sugar-balancing protein and fiber. Think: an apple with nut butter packet, trail mix, a high-quality protein bar, or crunchy roasted chickpeas. These are easy to toss in your bag and will help you avoid hangry impulse food choices. Keep up your water intake - staying adequately hydrated will help with energy, bowel regularity, craving control and weight management. Bring a reusable water bottle and fill it up post-security to save money and stay ahead of dehydration (which is especially important while flying). Pro Tip: add electrolytes or a pinch of sea salt to facilitate deeper cellular hydration.
Stay active - walking is one of the best ways to stay active, and it’s easy to do in most locations; however, don’t hesitate to check out local hiking trails or rent a bike, if available. You can also do simple bodyweight workouts (such as squats, pushups and planks), stretch in your hotel room, or hit the hotel gym—a little goes a long way.
Pack an emergency supplement kit - besides your daily staples, I recommend traveling with magnesium citrate (for constipation relief), GABA (for support sleep), digestive enzymes (for digestive support), and activated charcoal (to alleviate travel’s diarrhea or food poisoning).
Do a little research - look up healthy restaurants at your destination and make reservations ahead of time. Also, identify the nearest health food store and stock up on snacks, drinks and other essentials.
Eat mindfully, but also enjoy - exploring new restaurants is fun, exciting and (in my opinion) one of the best parts of travel. I typically encourage clients to eat what they truly want—but aim to do so mindfully. For example, if you're indulging in something rich, balance it out with a salad or veggie-based soup. Bonus: you may even inspired to recreate some of these dishes at home!
A little planning goes a long way when it comes to staying healthy on the go—so pack some snacks, comfy walking shoes, and a water bottle, grab your favorite travel partner, and hit the road! Remember, if you're traveling for pleasure, the goal is fun and adventure. Do what you can to support your health, but stay flexible and present so you can fully enjoy the experience.
