Need A Boost? Add These Superfoods

Are you exhausted, brain foggy, anxious and constipated? Superfoods can help! Exceptionally concentrated in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, these nutritional powerhouses are classified as the “superheroes” of the plant kingdom. They not only fill in the gaps of nutrient deficiencies, but also supercharge the metabolism, assist in detoxification, boost immunity, fight against chronic diseases and MORE.

Here are my top 5 superfoods:

  1. Cacao - with an ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) score of 95,000, raw chocolate (cacao) contains 14 times more antioxidants than red wine and 21 times more than green tea. Rich in magnesium, fiber, zinc, chromium and flavonols, cacao is a natural dopamine booster that’s great for mood, energy, regulating blood sugar levels, improving heart health, bowel regularity, and even weight loss!

I recommend adding a tablespoon of cacao powder to your morning smoothie, crunching on cacao nibs (aka adult “sprinkles”) or enjoying up to 1 oz. of (at least) 70% cacao content dark chocolate per day.

  2. Spirulina - this blue-green algae contains 60% protein and is considered one of the few “complete” plant-based proteins, providing all the essential amino acids needed to rebuild, repair and strengthen. Spirulina is also a rich source of alkalizing carotenoids, energizing B vitamins, detoxifying chlorophyll and blood-building iron.

Add a teaspoon of spirulina to your green smoothie, matcha latte (yes, really!) or homemade energy balls for your daily wellness boost!

  3. Microgreens - with up to 40 times the nutrient density of their mature counterparts (i.e. a full head of broccoli or kale), these tiny greens are highly concentrated in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants such as beta carotene, vitamin E and vitamin C. Although they resemble sprouts, the biggest difference is sprouts are grown in water while microgreens germinate in soil.

Great as a finishing touch for avocado toast or soup, microgreens can also be added to salads, wraps, tacos or smoothies. The best part? All you need is a sprinkle to flood your body with megadoses of nutrients.

  4. Wild blueberries - low in sugar, yet packed with fiber, anthocyanin (a powerhouse antioxidant) and vitamin C, wild blueberries top the list of healthiest fruits available. Notoriously linked to brain health and fighting colon cancer, wild blueberries also boost the immune system, support digestion and help lower inflammation.

Add 1/2 cup of wild blueberries to a smoothie, in chia pudding, atop your next yogurt parfait, or enjoy them on their own for a healthier sweet tooth satisfier.

  5. Wild salmon - rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, wild-caught salmon is a low-toxicity fish that enhances memory and cognitive function while alleviating aches and pain, fighting fine lines and wrinkles, improving cholesterol levels, and lubricating the joints.

Depending on the variety (sockeye, coho, king, etc.), one 3.5 oz. serving of wild-caught salmon can provide up to 1,700 mg omega-3s! I recommend including this superfood in your diet 2-3 times per week.

Superfoods are supercharged in nutrients (that we could all use a little more of, especially in our modern world!). Adding varieties such as cacao, spirulina, microgreens, wild blueberries and wild salmon to your diet will give you that extra boost of energy and brain power to help you thrive day-to-day, while keeping your immune system strong and heart healthy for a long, happy and healthy life.
